Jazz Fest 2007 is Here! Old Favorites, New Faces

27 April 2007

Its the first day of Jazz Fest and everyone staying at the Avenue Inn Bed and Breakfast is excited in anticipation of three great days of music, culture and plenty of sun.

The temperature this morning (as we write) is a beautiful 70 degrees with low humidity. By noon its expected to be 75 degrees with sunny skies. Just perfect for sitting on a blanket at the fair grounds where the festival is being held.

When the gates of the 2007 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival Presented by Shell open, the event will be just Jazz Fest, not post Katrina Jazz Fest. Emboldened by the success of 2006 (starring Bruce Springsteen last year to get that ball rolling) longtime Jazz Fest producer Quint Davis has beefed up this year’s talent roster. Rod Stewart and Nora Jones are slated to hold court this first weekend. In fact the roster is broad and deep, from marquee stars to curiosities such as the Gangbe Band of Benin from West Africa and Elder Edward Babb and the Madison Bumble Bees from a South Carolina spirituralist church.

Overall, there are 20 more “national” names this year as compared with 2006 according to Quint. The producers have also tinkered with the festival’s bluprint this year, in an effort to improve the experience for fans. They’ve expanded and swapped out tents, added video screens for better viewing and have forbidden chairs directly in front of the largest stages.

All in all it’s predicted to be one of the best Jazz Fest’s ever. Not bad for a city not given much of a chance 18 months ago.

The only thing missing is you, that is if you are reading this the first weekend of this year’s activities. But there is still time. Next weekend will be just as fabulous, so hop on a jet and come on down or over for a fantastic time. There are still rooms available for the second weekend. ?
