Finally, some good tourism news for New Orleans!

22 December 2006

Today’s Times Picayune had a featured article on what has to be a “step in the right direction” for our city. Orbitz, the online booking company named New Orleans one of seven travel “hot spots” for 2007 and Travel+Leisure magazine listed the city as a top destination in its January edition.

Orbitz criteria for the selected cities included four areas: hotel inventory and pricing; the number of events and festivals in an area; the trendiness of a destination and the degree to which a tourism market can be considered “emerging”. According to Orbitz officials “New Orleans is a city that travelers are again waking up to.”

“Less than 18 months after Hurricane Katrina, much of New Orleans is back and ready for visitors,” Travel+Leisure wrote. “Revamped favorites and interesting newcomers are contributing to the second act of one of America’s favorite cities.

In a related story, the “Today” show named New Orleans as one of the top holiday destinatons in the country, according to Sandy Shilstone of the New Orleans Tourism and Marketing Corp.
