We know that New Orleans is well known for haunted places, does the Avenue Inn have any ghosts?

5 October 2006

We get this question all the time. Quite frankly, its a matter of opinion and we leave that up to our guests.

We’ve had reports of many strange occurrences over the years. Some we attribute to co-incidence and others, perhaps, to friendly old Dr. Picard, one of the original owners. He passed away here in 1902.

One guest recently remarked that she saw a cat in her room one night by the fireplace. When we assured her we were pet free, she said, “Well, it was only there for a moment and then it disappeared”. Now that’s a bit strange, unless you understand the full history of the mansion. You see, for about 45 years beginning in the fifties, the house was operated as a boarding home by an eccentric lady, Jeanie Ellison, who loved cats. In fact, she was known to the neighbors as the cat woman of St. Charles Avenue. In addition to her human guests, she boarded over 100 cats in a compound on the premises. We wonder if one is still around…?

For more on accounts of interesting visits in the night go to this article at Bed and Breakfast.com, and scroll down to the South region where you will find a few anecdotes about the happenings at the Avenue Inn B&B, or better yet, reserve a room here and with any luck you may meet Dr. Picard himself, or see Ms. Ellison’s cat.
