Canal Street Project Nears Completion; Celebration Planned

8 August 2007

One of the signs of progress in the city is the improvement of the infrastructure and public venues. Here is an except from a press release by the Downtown Development District of New Orleans-

With work on the Canal Street Improvement Project just days away from completion, the Downtown Development District and the Canal Street Development Corporation are focusing on a celebration. Canal Street: A National Treasure is scheduled for September 8.
The project includes new granite and brick sidewalks and landscaping on the curb and in the neutral ground. The project is part of a larger strategy, according to DDD President and CEO Kurt Weigle. “Our goal is to make Canal Street the center of commerce again by changing the retail mix and redeveloping several historic buildings along the corridor to include retail, medical and residential space,” he said. This street improvement project has created a welcoming, attractive location for investors and entrepreneurs.”

Now that the street has a look befitting its history and stature, the City of New Orleans and the Downtown Development District want to show off the makeover. On September 8, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Canal Street will come alive with music, merchant promotions and a treasure hunt/trivia game that features a grand prize of merchandise from Canal Street merchants totaling more than $1000. The grand prize will be presented at the end of the day at a stage sponsored by Harrah’s.

Mayor C. Ray Nagin and other dignitaries will kick off the event at 11 a.m. in front of Chateau Sonesta Hotel with music provided by the New Orleans Concert Band. Wanda Rouzan will be on stage near Krauss later in the day, and other musicians will stroll up and down the street.
Throughout the day, people can tape their stories and memories of Canal Street, and some of these taped reminiscences may be selected to be presented on New Orleans Television, the in-room television station at most New Orleans hotels. Peggy Scott Laborde will be on hand to autograph the book she wrote with historian John Magill from 10 a.m. to noon. Other activities are still being planned.
“It’s going to be a great day for Canal Street and New Orleans,” Nagin said. “People will have a chance to come and see all the good things that are starting to happen downtown.”
